Breathing other people’s tobacco smoke is the cause of one in every 100 deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation.
It said in a study that the toll is heaviest among women and children who account for three-quarters of the 600,000 global deaths a year.
The highest numbers of people exposed to second-hand smoke are in Europe and Asia.
