9 months for underwear drug smuggler

A St Ann businesswoman who pleaded guilty to trying to export three pounds of ganja to St Maarten in her underwear, was sentenced to nine months in prison at hard labour when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

Samantha Currie, 24, who was caught at the Norman Manley International Airport on June 14, was also fined $155,000 and if the fine is not paid she will serve a further nine months in prison.

According to court reports, Currie checked in at the airport and was seen walking strangely towards the departure line. She was stopped and searched and 14 pellets of ganja were found in her brassiere and four rectangular shaped parcels containing ganja were found hidden in her underwear.

The police also found US$440 in her possession, which she said was her payment to smuggle the drug.

Currie, who was sentenced by Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams, was fined $5,000 or three months for possession of ganja and $150,000 or six months for taking steps to export the drug.

She was admonished and discharged on the dealing in charge. If the fines are not paid the sentences will run consecutive to the mandatory sentence.
