July 6 hearing for man accused of burying girl alive

GARSHA Wilson, a taxi driver accused of abducting, raping and burying a 12-year-old girl alive, was remanded in custody for a preliminary hearing on July 6 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court last week.

Wilson is facing charges of rape, abduction, attempted murder, malicious destruction of property and cruelty to a child.

Wilson’s attorney CJ Mitchell, had previously informed the court that his client wanted to plead guilty and as a result the court had sought a voluntary bill for the matter to be sent to the Circuit Court.

However, on Wednesday, the defence changed its position and requested that the matter be scheduled for a preliminary hearing.

According to police reports, Wilson, who is known to the complainant and is described as a family friend, allegedly kidnapped the child from the Half-Way-Tree Transportation Centre in St Andrew on March 22.

Wilson reportedly offered to take the child to meet her mother at PriceSmart Supermarket on Red Hills Road in Kingston, but took her to Smokey Vale, St Andrew, where he raped and choked her.

It is reported that he used a stone to hit her in the head and after she became unconscious, used several stones to cover her body. But the child regained consciousness and was taken to the police station by residents who assisted her.

Wilson, who reportedly accompanied the mother to report the child missing, fled the scene after he heard that she was found. He was arrested three days later.
