Bail for cop on attempted rape charge

A police constable accused of trying to rape a 22-year-old woman who he offered a ride home, was  on Friday granted bail in the sum of $250,000 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The policeman, who was stationed at a police station in St Andrew, is charged with attempt to rape.

An investigating officer in the matter told the court that on April 9, the policeman tried to hold down the woman in his car and attempted to rape her.

The woman — a civilian worker employed at a police station — and the policeman were reportedly returning home from the wake of another policeman who was mowed down and killed on March 18.

However, the woman, who reportedly refused the policeman advances, reported the matter and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who ruled that the constable should be charged.

The policeman, who was arrested last week, was offered bail by Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams after his attorney Anthony Pearson made the application.

Pearson told the court that his client was innocent of the charge.
