Of Course, The poorest always suffer

By Sandrea:- MY GRIPE

“The Budget may hit the poor harder than the rich, tax experts warned today”. Well that does not take Einstein or a degree in economics to know and understand, it is always the poor that suffers.

I cannot understand why anyone is surprise that whenever spending cuts are made in the budget, it is the poorest of society that suffer.

Whenever a particular political party started talking about ‘black hole’ in expenditure, and deficit, then you can almost guarantee that the most vulnerable within our society is in for a rough ride.

Cutting public expenditures hurt the elderly, children, the unemployed, families on low income, there is no getting away from that fact because the poor are the biggest group in society.  The chancellor’s budget is not going to hurt the rich, they are rich, it is not going to stop their children going to private schools, it is not going to stop them drinking the most expensive champagne, purchasing the most expensive cars, buying the most expensive second home, they can afford to do so.

However, on the other-hand, the poor will have to tighten their belts, we are already living below the poverty lines and this budget is simply going to push us further down that line.

If the economy cannot generate enough jobs in order that every person that is capable of working can get a job, then those people depends on the state to assist them, and I am sure that, with that in mind was why the ‘welfare system’ was created to assist those in society that is unable, or for other reasons need the state to help them.

So, it is not a surprise to us that, child benefit, child tax credit, income support, unemployment benefit, state pensions, all of these benefits which are aimed at helping the poor, the weak, and the frail  of society, when target they caused so much pain to these groups,  any cuts or significant reduction in these benefit hit these people the hardest, as rich people do not have to claim these benefits.

It makes me sick when the respected “Institute for Fiscal Studies” warned that Britain is facing “the longest, deepest and most sustained” period of public services spending cuts since the Second World War.

This is the 21st century and one would have thought that we would be progressive instead we are regressive and it seems that every time we have a change of Government that regression gets further and further, and it appear that there is no end in sight to this.

How can poor people pull themselves out of the economic black hole that we find ourselves when we can just about feed, clothes, and keep a roof over our heads.

These kind of social problems are what drive crime and criminal activities and until the Government make it so that poorest of society can effectively take care of themselves they cannot and will not be able to prevent crimes, and the criminal activities will cost the country a dam sight more than all the benefit cuts to the poor that they make, and this is something that the Chancellor should keep in mind each time he decide to decimate the welfare system.
