DUBLIN—Irish police say two children in Cork have been strangled by their father, who then burned himself to death in his car, while another man in neighboring Limerick has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing to death two children, his wife and his sister-in-law.
Tuesday’s apparently unrelated killings have caused widespread shock in Ireland, where murders of children are rare.
The victims in Ballycotton, County Cork, were sisters aged 7 and 2 and their 43-year-old father, who doused his car in fuel before crashing it in a fireball.
Those found stabbed to death in a home in Newcastle West, County Limerick, were a 3-month-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, their mother and aunt. Police arrested a 31-year-old man suspected of killing the four. They identified him as the husband of one victim.
