The meaning of a World Cup

The World Cup has begun, but what is the meaning of World Cup? World Cup is much more than the game itself. The emotions are not restricted to the four lines that surounded the field where 22 players try to do their best to reach the glory.

The World Cup is more than just the excitement of 90 minutes plus 2 or 3 minutes of injury time of a game which can be decided by a flash of genius, a touch of magic, a strategic tackle, a 1-second look to the goal and the sweat on a player’s or a fan’s face. There is much more than that in the World Cup.

The World Cup is more than the respect between opponents: congratulating them when they win and comforting those fans whose teams have lost. It is more than to cheer beside someone that you never saw before and be his/her best friend right away, laughing, hugging when a goal is scored and sharing that moment.

The World Cup is much more get excited when the ball hits the post, or when a penalty is given. No matter the colour of the jersey, the flag or the skin, everybody together, white, black, red, brown, green and blue, smiling, dancing, celebrating a simple game, where 22 men in a pitch, running after a ball and trying to put it into the net.

People who do not like this sport (yes, there are a few of them) keep asking: “what is the deal about football?” – and actually nobody can give them a precise answer. Football, foosball, futbol, futebol, fudbal, soccer, sokker, zúqiú, sakkā whatever the name is, it is the beautiful game.

World cup is much more than the billion of dollars that are spent as investments by building and renovating roads, stadiums, public transportation, infrastructure and tourism. It is not about the millions of dollars that a player or a sport brand can make out of the events. It is not about being considered the main event of the most popular sport in the World.

It is more than going shopping for your favourite team jersey, purchasing little flags to put it in the car window, more than painting the face, chanting traditional songs and looking for a TV set  anywhere close.

The World Cup goes beyond waking up earlier in the morning, having a couple of beers for breakfast, booking meetings before or after the games. The World Cup is not a simple subject to be used in order to break the ice in the elevator like the weather is.

World Cup is not only the passion of a fan or a entire nation, that makes people to get along and sometimes, to fight for a reason that nobody really understands. It’s a passion that has stopped wars, conflicts, brought peace, food and attention to many situations that only this sport would be able to do.

Maybe, World Cup and the passion about soccer is the smile of a child when receiving his/her first soccer ball, a rudimentary toy, a simple sphere with some drawings, that unites countries and attracts the world’s attention, make people go crazy, help big deals to be closed, but essentially produce a smile on people’s faces.

Maybe, this is the answer: Football is the passion shared by different people around the World and the World Cup is the celebration of that passion, which makes people believe the dream that John Lennon one day sang, is not over and finally, the World will live as one.
