News – Bus in Ecuador plunges into ravine killing at least 38

News – A BUS plunged into a ravine in central Ecuador, killing at least 38 people in the Andean nation’s worst road accident of the year.

The bus driver and four children were among those killed, while a three-month old baby whose mother died was one of 12 injured survivors.

The public bus, linking Ecuador’s capital Quito with the country’s third largest city, Cuenca, crashed on Sunday about 120 kilometres  south of the capital, plunging 100 meters  down a hillside in the Lake Yambo area.

Preliminary investigations indicated driver fatigue, overcrowding on the bus, mechanical problems with the vehicle and an insufficient road barrier could all have contributed to the crash.
