Iran – Stoning how utterly medieval

The recent furore in the international press regarding the stoning of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, which the Iranian has now decided not to carry out, is a commendable move on the part of the Iranian government.

However, it should not have gone this far, Iran, if this country want the international world to take it seriously and if they truly want to be an effective country within the international community they need to shed those archaic laws that they have been using for so many years.

I would imagine that everyone around the world would agree that Iran is entitle to a judicial system that will bring it’s citizen to justice for whatever crimes they may commit, but that system and punishment should reflect the 21st century.

According to ‘Amnesty International’, Ja’Far Kiani a father of two was stoned to death for adultery, can you imagine the West having this illiterate law, then there would certainly be a shortage of men in the world, in fact, women would not be spared, as this is the reason that Iran want to stone Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.

This is a country that want to be given the ability to create nuclear fuel.  It is now understandable, why the West is refusing to allow this, if we cannot trust Iran to bring their judical system up to 21st century standard and stop behaving as if they are living in the ‘dark ages’, then we must agree with all the sanctions that have been imposed on them by the United Nation.

Why would any country want to waste their meagre resources to prosecute someone for committing adultery, there is no way that any state should get involve with these kind of petty crimes, much more to want to put somebody to death in the most derogatory manner one can imagine.

Irrespective of the fact, that the Iranians may have had this draconian laws passed down to them by individuals who knew no better, the vast majority of the Iranian government are people with University degrees, they ought to know better, and not because they have inherited these laws mean that they cannot change them.  With progress come compromise and the Iranians should demonstrate that they not only understand progress, but they are willing to ensure that they can effectively under-take democracy within their country without losing site of their identity.

Once again, their move to back down on the stoning of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, I am sure is appreciate by the international community, what they should now do is to release her and let her go home to her family.  They cannot take back the 99 lashes she has already be given, but should they release her, this will make the world begin to realise that this is a country that listen and when they recognise that they have made mistakes, they are willing to correct it.

If Iran want the backing of the international community, the Government has to demonstrate their ability to be compassionate, caring, and about all show that they are human beings, that are willing to correct any injustice that they know to be wrong
