How many ‘black’ men has to die?

By Sandrea:- MY GRIPE

As I read the story of the shooting death of 22 year old Oscar Grant, the police officer convicted for involuntary manslaughter, I feel numb.

I, as a mother of two boys can not even begin to understand how Oscar’s parents are coping with his death knowing that he was technically executed, whether is was by accident as the officer claim is only he and God really knows the truth.

I do not necessary disbelieve people when they say something, and this officer could be honest that he was reaching for his taser, and accidentally drew his pistol instead, the question them remains, is a taser the same as a handgun, and do they feel the same, because if they do then this could really be an accident.  However, I am sure even the officer involved in the incident, and from the letter that he has written, he can understand that over the last couple of years, ‘black’ men has been murdered by police officers in what is clearly over used of force and those officer (white) always seems to get away with little or no punishment.

When a ‘black’ man murder a white officer he goes away to prison for life, or his given the ‘death penalty’ so forgive us if we believe that there is clearly a double standard that exist and it would seem that the law give more credence to the life of a white person than it does to a member of the ethnic minority, this cannot continue.

From all these cases it always seem that even before a ‘black’ person, who is charged with killing a white person goes to court he’s guilty, but when it is a white person, he his innocent even before he’s tried.  This double standard has gone on far too long and is should stop, the punishment should reflect the crime and this officer should at the very least be doing 20 to life that would have been a fair decision.

I am sure the ensuing riot that followed the verdict and the subsequent arrest of 50 or so people that are in custody, I image all or most are black.

In this the 21st century we should not have to resort to rioting and violence to be able to get our point across or to stop the injustice that has bestowed upon our people for so many years, it is time that we have a judicial system that cater for all not for a few.

I hope that Oscar Grant’s family find it in their hearts to forgive this officer, and continue to hold Oscar memory dearly, I really hope they can find peace.
