Guyanese cop arrested for killing teenager

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – A police officer has been taken into custody after a 16-year-old youth was shot and killed on Monday night.

A police statement said that Kelvin Fraser was among a group of young men allegedly harassing female students of a secondary school here and that he was shot during a scuffle with the policeman.

They said law enforcement officials had “responded promptly” after the headmistress of the school had informed them that the men were molesting the students.

“There was a scuffle between Fraser and a rank who was armed with a service shotgun during efforts to arrest the teen, and the gun went off. The bullet hit Fraser in his chest. Fraser was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” the statement said.

The police said that the officer involved in the incident has since been taken into custody.

The teen is a relative of former superintendent of police, Leon Fraser, who was shot and killed during a shoot out with bandits in 2002.
