Council house – ‘Life’

By Sandrea:-  MY GRIPE

It never fails to amaze me how politicians have this inate ability to shoot themselves in the foot, they somehow do not have the ability to use their heads rather than their mouths, and the majority of times that they open their mouths they end up saying something that make them look rather stupid.

Now, the comment that David Cameron made during his question and answer session, in Birmingham, regarding the fact that ‘council house should not be granted for life’, is rather stupid and infantile for a Prime Minister to make.

Mr Cameron needs to understand that the majority of people who live in ‘council’ houses do so because they cannot afford to buy their own home.  This situation was recognised by many politicians before him and that his the reason why ‘Councils’ all over the country embarked on a housing project in order that they can offer accommodation to people, and if it means that they have to live in their accommodation for life, then why would Cameron want to take that away from them.

When a tenant takes on a contract they do so in the knowledge that so long as they paid their rent, conduct themselves in a manner that does not cause their nerighbours any problems, do not undertake antisocial behaviour they are entitled to live in their accommodation until they either die or for a few, they can afford to purchase their own home, and their is no legal framework as to how long that will be .  Why would Cameron want to change that is beyond me.

Well Mr Cameron, let me put it like this, we are not all rich, the great majority of us cannot simply just go out and buy our own property, and therfore, we rely on the Council, to house us in decent and affordable housing and once we get our housing, if we choose to live their for the rest of our lives, then why would you want to take that away from us.

Has the Coalition Government run out of ideas so quickly in that the Prime Minister want to take on the frail of society.  Are you telling me that the Government cannot find any other pressing issues to focus on, for example crime, criminals, drugs, employment, are you telling me that they have run out of steam already, it is not even a year.  To say I am dissapointed is putting it midly.

I do not believe that Cameron realise that the country did not give him a mandate to Govern us and when you are a Coalition Government then you have to agree with your coalition partners any issues that you decide that may require reform.

Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat deputy leader has already warned that Prime Minister that ‘fixed term’ council tenancy agreement in “no way” represents coalition policy.

Mr Cameron must realise that not being given an overall mandate by the British people to Govern, he must be very careful of what he says in public, as it could be the ‘straw that break the coalition back’
