Britian – Not yet ready for a ‘Black’ Prime Minister

By Sandrea: MY GRIPE

The announcement of Diane Abbott to put herself up for Labour party leader, is a very commendable effort.  However, she of all people should realise that her effort is futile and be categorised as a  pipe dream.

I still recall when Diane Abbot became the first black woman be voted as member of parliament, and she has been a handful of people who can credit themselves as long serving PM. And I suppose, being in parliament for so long, having gone through a number of Labour leaders, and Prime Ministers, should really give her the insight into what an effective leader and ultimate Prime Minister should be. Unfortunately, she will not create another first, there are too much obstacles in the way.

It is equally commendable that she was able to secure the 33 labour nominations that was necessary for her to be put forward as a contender for the leadership of the Labour Party.  In my opinion this is just a show-case, as I cannot really see her been nominated to that top position.  Not to say that she should not try, but I believe that she is well aware, and know in her heart that this is only a pipe-dream and one that most likely will not happen in the UK for a very long time.

I must say that I have a great deal of respect for Diane, but unfortunately, I also have to look at reality, and the reality is that the Britain is not yet ready for a ‘black’ leader of the Labour party, much more a potential ‘black’ Prime Minister.

It is going to take a century for another female to lead this country much more become PM, that throne is firmly held by Maggie Thatcher and she will hold it for a very long-time.

The constituency of  Hackney North and Stoke Newington, London, must be very proud that their member of parliament is running for the top job and I can imagine they will be giving her all the support they can, but ultimately her efforts will be a loss-leader.

As been reported in the ‘ Jamaican Observer’  “The contest will be a race among four white, male Oxbridge-educated former ministers and a Cambridge-educated black woman considered an outsider. Her opponents will be David Miliband; his younger brother Ed Miliband, the shadow energy secretary; Ed Balls, the shadow education secretary; and Andy Burnham, the shadow health secretary”.

Come on now Diane, do you really believe that you have an ounce of chance.  I admire your fortitude, and hope that your bold move will give encourage ethnic minority to step up to the plate and demonstrate their willingness to try even if it will amount to failure.

Congratulations in taking the lead, and not just staying in the back-ground, although in my hearts- of hearts, I know you efforts will be futile, I respect them
