Singer and actress Bernie Nolan has revealed she has breast cancer.

The 49-year-old member of all-sister group The Nolans was diagnosed last week and told she faces a mastectomy and chemotherapy.

She is the third Nolan sister to have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Anne and Linda Nolan both beat the disease.

Dublin-born Bernie Nolan, who played Sgt Sheelagh Murphy in The Bill, told the News of the World: “I’m going to kick this cancer’s ass.”

She said although it had been difficult telling her 10-year-old daughter, Erin, about the diagnosis, her daughter had also given her the strength to fight the disease.

She said: “The best thing about having a child is I have the extra strength because I want to see her grow up and I have to be strong for her.”

Bernie Nolan spent 20 years singing with her sisters, who had a number of hits including I’m In The Mood For Dancing, before she moved into television.

She has appeared in Channel 4’s Brookside and played Sgt Sheelagh Murphy in The Bill, as well as starring in musicals and reality TV show Pop Star to Opera Star.

Last year The Nolans, who were originally known as The Nolan Sisters, reformed for a UK tour.
