Banker, lover for court May 14

The case involving a senior female banker and her live-in boyfriend, who are currently facing sex-related charges, is to return to court on May 14.

The matter was mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, but a new date was set as the arresting officer’s statement was still outstanding.

The 52-year-old foreign-exchange trader is charged with aiding and abetting indecent assault, cruelty to a child and failing to report a crime. Her 37-year-old boyfriend is charged with indecent assault and cruelty to a child.

Investigators told THE WEEKEND STAR that the 12-year-old at the centre of the case is from a depressed inner-city community

Allegations are that the couple offered to take in the child, who was in the process of preparing for GSAT exams. The child had reportedly been living at their St Andrew home since 2008, after the couple promised to provide for her financially and offered a safe environment conducive to studying.

It is alleged, however, that the boyfriend started sexually abusing the child, who told investigators that the banker was made aware of the abuse, but did nothing. She also told police the banker walked in on the abuse one afternoon and still did not report it.

As a result, the child started telling teachers, relatives and others about her ordeal. Investigations by the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offence and Child Abuse led to the couple’s arrest.

Both had their $2m bails extended.
