Bangladesh floods kill 6, 10,000 displaced

AUTHORITIES say floods triggered by monsoon rains in southern Bangladesh have killed 6 people and displaced more than 10,000.

Government administrator Zainul Bari says two rivers in the region have overflowed after five days of heavy rain and inundated about 200 villages. The displaced have taken shelter in school buildings in the flood-hit district of Cox’s Bazar.

Another government official Shafiq Mia said on Friday that six flood-related deaths have been reported in the area, 296km south of Dhaka.

Monsoon floods are common in Bangladesh, a tropical delta nation of 150 million people.
