Youth shot at Pinole Valley High track meet

One youth was shot in the hand Wednesday when a high school track meet at Pinole Valley High School turned chaotic, with multiple fights on the track and crowds running to escape the mayhem, police said.

Authorities did not identify the youth who was shot, but said he was taken to the hospital with a wound to his hand. A suspect identified as D’Nedric Kelly, 19, of Richmond, was arrested nearby carrying a loaded handgun, Pinole police said. Police are looking for a second suspect spotted running from the scene.

What started as a four-school track meet turned violent at about 4 p.m. Police were called to break up a large crowd of people fighting at the school’s track. While en route, police got reports of gunshots.

Students from Pinole Valley, El Cerrito, De Anza and Hercules high schools were participating in the meet.

It’s unclear what started the fighting. The shooting took place in the school parking lot as several groups fought on the combination track and football field nearby, police said.

After cordoning off the area, police say they found Kelly near the Red Onion restaurant, which is close to the school. He was being held without bail at the Contra Costa County jail in Martinez on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and other gun charges, authorities said.

West Contra Costa Unified School District officials could not be reached.
