US citizen drowns in St James

MONTEGO BAY, St James — A United States citizen, who was the owner of a condominium at the Palmyra Resort and Spa, drowned on Friday while he swam at a beach close to the property, police said.

The man has been identified as Dr Baldwin Coore, 70, of 441 Ely Avenue, Bronx, New York, USA and Palmyra Resort and Spa, Rose Hall, St James.

A police source told the Observer that on Friday morning, around 8 o’clock, Coore went for a swim after he requested a beach towel.

While he was swimming, it is believed that he got into difficulties and drowned.

He was fished from the water around 12:10 by a lifeguard on duty. The body was later removed to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.

A grief-stricken Lester Scott, general manager at Palmyra Resort and Spa expressed sorrow at the passing of the elderly man. “It is a very sombre situation. It is like losing somebody who is a part of the family. The whole Palmyra family is in a very sad mood,” Scott told the Observer during a telephone interview yesterday afternoon.

“He was a great guy, a true gentleman who made everybody feel special, and we are all saddened by his passing.”
