Tooth-camera spy detained in Iran

A US woman with “spying technology or a microphone” hidden in her teeth has been detained by Iranian customs authorities.

The woman was captured in the border town of Nordouz in northwest Iran, the Iran daily reported last night.

She had arrived at the border town of Nordouz from neighbouring Armenia without a visa, the Farsi journal reported.

“About a week ago an American spy woman whose name is said to be Hal Talayan was arrested by customs officials at Nordouz” border area in East Azarbaijan province, the Fars news agency said, quoting an unnamed source.

The woman is the fourth American who has been arrested by Iran and accused of spying in less than two years.

In July 2009, Iran detained three Americans who were initially accused of crossing the border illegally from northern Iraq and later accused of spying.

The US has dismissed the spying charges and says the three are innocent hikers. Their families have said if they crossed the border at all, it was inadvertent.

One of the three, Sarah Shourd, was released last September on compassionate grounds. Her fiance, Shane Bauer, and friend Josh Fattal remain in prison and could go on trial next month.
