Three suspects held in McGill murder probe

THE Mandeville police say they now have three men in custody in connection with the slaying last Friday night of former People’s National Party (PNP) parliamentarian Dr Neil McGill.

According to the police, the men were apprehended in Barnstable, a community located a few miles away from where McGill was shot.

“One of the suspects is wanted for questioning in connection with the 2009 killing of a policeman, while another reportedly worked at the home of the female who McGill went to visit before he was killed,” said an investigating officer in the case yesterday.

On Saturday, the police reported that at around 8:45 pm Friday McGill, 60, drove to the home of the female student located along a dirt track in a community close to an area called Vietnam.

The police said that while he waited in his car, three men — one armed with a gun and one with a knife — attacked the female who was on her way to meet McGill.

Police say they received reports that the men were hiding in heavy foliage near the house.

The thieves attempted to grab a handbag from the female and during a struggle she was slashed on her hand but managed to escape. As she ran to her gate, one of the men fired a shot.

Cops summoned to the area later found McGill’s body slumped over the steering wheel of his car.

Yesterday, the police said they were not discounting the possibility that the gun used in the attack was the weapon stolen from the slain cop last year.

“We are not ruling out anything at this time. So far we are getting information and we will continue with our investigations in the matter,” said one cop.

Both the ruling Jamaica Labour Party and the Opposition PNP have condemned the attack.

The JLP, in a release said, “Dr McGill was well respected and liked by colleagues in and outside Parliament and was seen as a bright and affable gentleman”… known for his passion for representational politics and his deep care and love for ordinary Jamaicans.

Opposition Leader Portia Simpson-Miller, who is on an official visit to Canada, said in a release, “I am deeply saddened at the news of Neil’s murder. I condemn this murder which has come as a surprise to all of us in the PNP family.”
