SIX men and one woman were arrested in Birmingham, central England during counterterrorism raids, West Midlands Police said.
The men were detained on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism in the UK, while the woman was detained on suspicion of failing to disclose information.
Searches were underway of the properties where the arrests took place overnight.
“The operation is in its early stages so we are unable to go into detail at this time about the nature of the suspected offences,” Assistant chief constable Marcus Beale of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit said in a statement.
“However, I believe it was necessary to take action at this time in order to ensure public safety.”
