Schoolchildren given safety messages from police

POLICE in Long Eaton have been teaching children about personal safety.

They attended a Danger Roadshow at Harrington Junior School, where talks were also given by the fire service and prison service.

Police community support officer Jeannette Gardner and PC Andy Bircumshaw talked to the youngsters.

PCSO Gardner said: “We spoke to every class in the school, so it was important to tailor our message to each age group and the things that may affect them.

“For example, with the Year Six students we talked about the age of criminal responsibility and what constitutes anti-social behaviour, as well as the precautions to take when browsing the internet and visiting social networking sites.

“We also talked to the children about cycling safety, such as using a helmet and lights, and protecting their bike by using a lock and chain.

“We hope that the messages the children have received during the roadshow will help them to stay safe at home and while out in the community.”
