A UK retiree refused to tell suspicious cops why he hid £500,000 ($870,073) in a toilet cistern, it has been reported.
The filthy loot was found after police stopped 70-year-old Peter Wells, who has a previous conviction for drug dealing, at a shopping center because of a minor traffic offense. the Daily Mirror reported.
Wells, from Essex in southeastern England, was carrying £80,000 in a bag found in his car.
Cops then searched his home because they suspected him of being a money launderer. Shocked investigators found £500,000 in a cavity around his toilet cistern and another £51,000 in his closet.
He told a judge he put the money around the toilet but refused to give any other explanation.
A court confiscated £632,000 from Wells earlier this month under the UK’s Proceeds of Crime Act.
