Police believe they have smashed a major car-jacking gang. Teams of officers swooped on five houses in early-morning raids across Manchester today. Five men and a woman were arrested. Police chiefs said the raids were launched following months of intelligence-based investigations in response to a rise in car-jackings across the south Manchester area.
Forensic officers are working to recover evidence from all five addresses raided. Warrants were executed at Ratcliffe Street, Levenshulme; Marcliffe Drive, Levenshulme; Paxton Place, Beswick; Mouldsworth Avenue, Withington and Polebrook Avenue in Ardwick.
All six suspects are being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to steal. Det Sgt Richard Arthern said: “Today’s operation is a positive response to a rise in car-jackings in our area over the past few months. “We have been investigating for some time to identify those responsible and today marks the first proactive strike against an organised crime group suspected of being behind this.
“The people who have fallen victim to this sort of crime have been threatened and left extremely frightened so I hope this operation sends out a message to those involved in this sort of criminal enterprise that we are watching you.” Motorists are being asked to always remain vigilant.
