Nigerian student accused of raping 5-y-o girl

Jamaica – A 24-year-old Nigerian student accused of raping a five-year-old girl was yesterday denied bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The Nigerian, who is reportedly in the island attending a community college, was arrested on Christmas Eve and charged with rape and indecent assault, following an incident on November 29 when he allegedly pulled the minor into his bedroom and sexually assaulted her.

But attorney Akin Adaramaja, representing the accused, strongly refuted the allegations against his client when they appeared before Magistrate Lorna Shelly Williams.

According to Adaramaja, the complainant’s mother made up the allegations against his client after he repeatedly rejected her sexual advances.

“She made them up maliciously,” the attorney told the court.

The accused was, however, denied bail and was remanded in custody after the police objected to bail on grounds that he is a flight risk as he did not have permanent residence on the island.

He is to return to court on January 4 next year.
