Mum breaks down in trial

THE mother of three boys allegedly drowned by their father says she hates her former husband and wants to see him convicted.

Cindy Gambino had to be helped from a Melbourne court yesterday after weeping uncontrollably while giving evidence against her former husband Robert Farquharson.

Mr Farquharson, 40, is charged with murdering the couple’s three children Jai, 10, Tyler, seven, and Bailey, two, when his car left the Princes Highway and plunged into a dam near Winchelsea in Victoria’s southwest on Father’s Day 2005.

“I hate him for what he has done to my life,” Ms Gambino told the Victorian Supreme Court jury.  In a harrowing triple-0 call played to the jury, Ms Gambino screamed “I’ve got to find my kids” and “My children are gone”.  “The car’s submerged, yes,” she said. “There’s three children trapped in the car.”

Cross-examined by Mr Farquharson’s barrister, Peter Morrissey SC, Ms Gambino did not deny baring her teeth at her former husband during her evidence on Friday.  She admitted she had supported Mr Farquharson for two years after the alleged murders. But she said she was told by her psychiatrist her denial was damaging her.

Earlier, Ms Gambino wept as secretly recorded telephone conversations were played. In one, Farquharson tells Ms Gambino he would never harm the children. “They were the love of my life,” he said.
