Man dies after Whitehead cave rescue

A 36-year-old man who was rescued after becoming trapped in a cave on the County Antrim coast has died.

Police, the ambulance service, the coastguard and a Royal Navy helicopter were all involved in the rescue operation at Whitehead.

The man was plucked by helicopter from the mouth of the cave which is just below Blackhead Lighthouse early on Monday morning.

He was later transferred to hospital for treatment.

Police said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
