Libyan oil minister defects to Tunisia

LIBYA’S oil minister has defected and fled to Tunisia, a Tunisian security official says.

The official said today that Shukri Ghanem, the head of the national oil company and Libya’s oil minister, crossed into Tunisia by road yesterday and defected.

The official, based in the border region, was not authorised to speak to the media.

Ghanem is one of the highest profile Libyan officials to defect amid fighting between Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s forces and rebels backed up by a NATO-led campaign of airstrikes.
