UNITED States sprinter Tyson Gay beat Jamaica’s Usain Bolt to cop first place in 9.84 in the 100 metres race at today’s Diamond League meet in Stockholm, Sweden.

Bolt made second place in 9.96 in the much-anticipated race.  Richard Thompson of Trinidad finished third in 10.10.

The three fastest men in the world were due to face each other, but Jamaica’s Asafa Powell withdrew on Wednesday evening after failing to shake off a lower-back injury.

Gay said that he had mentally prepared himself to face both of the Jamaicans.

Bolt had set the record at of 9.58 the last time the three met on the track, at the World Championships in Berlin last August.
