A FIRE swept through a home for the elderly in Johannesburg, killing 18 people and injuring scores more, a spokesman for South Africa’s Netcare 911 emergency service said Monday.
“Eighteen people are dead and 84 rescued,” said the spokesman, Chris Botha.
“The building was engulfed in flames and emergency personnel leaped into action to rescue the aged from the burning building,” Botha said.
The spokesman said the blaze broke out on Sunday night at the Pieter Wessels home for the elderly in Nigel, in the east of Johannesburg.
Police were at the scene to investigate the cause of fire.
