Facebook leads police to alleged killer in the Philippines

POLICE in the Philippines today arrested a suspect in the murders of nine people after identifying him through his Facebook account, BBC News reported.

Mark Dizon, a computer technician, is suspected of killing American Albert Mitchell, 70, Briton James Porter, 51 and Canadian Geoffrey Bennun, 60, plus their three Filipina partners and three Filipino domestic helpers in separate attacks in Angeles this month.

Mr Dizon would allegedly befriend his victims and gain their trust before entering their gated communities on the premise that he was going to repair their computers, officials said.

He allegedly killed his victims with a 9mm pistol then stole electronic gadgets from their homes, which he later pawned.

A witness saw a gunman fleeing from Mitchell’s home and described him to police.

A friend of the Mitchell family heard the description and recognised that Mr Dizon was a friend of the Mitchells’ daughter on social networking website Facebook.

Mr Dizon was arrested by plain-clothes police in a square in San Fernando City, north of Manila, after his father arranged to meet him, police officials said.

“Mark Dizon tried to fight his way out. But he was eventually overpowered by our policemen,” said Senior Superintendent Danilo Bautista, police chief of Angeles City, where the killings took place.

Mr Dizon denied involvement in the killings.
