TRAFFIC snarled in sections of downtown Kingston yesterday morning as security forces continued a curfew imposed in the area, following a massive operation in which 261 men were detained on Sunday.
Several roads leading into and out of the commercial hub were cordoned off and manned by soldiers, confusing motorists who were forced to seek alternative routes.
Sections of Spanish Town Road in the vicinity of the Coronation Market, West Queen’s Street, Heywood Street and Oxford Street leading to Denham Town, were among the cordoned off roads.
Wholesales and other establishments, specifically those on Orange, Princess and King streets were opened for business. However there seemed to be a lull in customers.
Police arrested a man who lives in Kirkland Heights, St Andrew, after they said they found three illegal pistols at his business place on Princess Street.
Police did not name the man, but said they believe he is a close associate of Donald ‘Zeeks’ Phipps, the former Matthews Lane area leader, who is now in prison on a murder conviction.
The three pistols, a Smith & Wesson 9mm; Sturm Ruger semi-automatic; and a Colt .45 semi-automatic, were among four illegal guns the police said they found in the sections of downtown Kingston under curfew since Sunday morning.
They also said that they seized an Uzi submachine gun loaded with 11 rounds, and that an additional 129 rounds of ammunition were also seized, bringing the total to 140, as well as an undetermined quantity of cocaine in the curfew.
It was not immediately clear yesterday whether or not additional persons were detained, or if other illegal weapons were seized.
