Crime – The Irony of it all

By Sandrea: MY GRIPE

For weeks now the international world have been focused on the problems that have been tearing the Island of Jamaica apart.

The international communities took great pleasure in calling parts of the country ‘slum’.   One would believe from all of the reports that Jamaica was the only country in the entire universe that had crime and criminal activities.  Jamaicans both at home and abroad had to sit back and watch as the Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke saga traumatised the country and left at least 70 people dead and many more injured.

Suddenly, low and behold, Derrick Bird came along with his license guns and murder 12 people in a corner of the UK that is not categorised as a ‘slum’.  Whitehaven is suppose to be a picture perfect part of the United Kingdom and a place where people are suppose to be free from gun crimes.

This, just goes to show that there is no where in the world that is safe from crime or criminal activities and we should not gloat, when other countries go through a difficult period in it’s history.

For days, I have many of my so-called friends gloating, saying, ‘we would never have such crimes in this country’, I could not go to Jamaica, there is too much crime.  I hope they are now choking on their words because we do have crime in this country and yes, there are people willing to take the lives of other irrespective of what country you may reside in.

When crimes like the Derrick Bird affair happens it shock the world, because as they believe this should not happen here and crimes such as these only happen in gun-tooting Jamaica.  Well lets just go back to 1987 Michael Ryan killed 16 people in Hungerford, 1996 Thomas Hamilton murdered 16 children and a teacher in Dunblane, Scotland.  So for the people who believe that Jamaica is the only place that gun crimes occur, you need to think again.

We won’t even mentioned the US, it would take more than enough pages to catergorised the number of people dead each day by guns and gun related crimes.

My gripe is that I was very annoyed when people kept referring to Jamaica as ‘slum’ and go on if we were the only nation that stupidity can happen to – well we are not.

I am certainly not gloating over the foolish thing that Derrick Bird as done, because in every case where there are guns involved, families are left moaning for loves ones and there are many people in Jamaica that have lost their sons and daughters, and equally many people in Whitehaven that are also mourning the lost of their beloved.

Let give a though for these unfortunate people and do not gloat when a tradegy occur in any country – it is not necessary
