Britian- Worst place for a child to grow up

By Sandrea:- MY GRIPE

How can this be, this is a G7 country with all the wealth that goes along with being a G7 .  So how can it be that a 2007  UNICEF  report named ” Britain as the worst place in the industrialised world for a child to grow up because of problems such as poverty, limited time with parents and exposure to risky activities like smoking, drinking and underage sex”.

This is not some far-reached corner of the world, where children are abandoned, parents dead, no social support.  This is the United Kingdom, where we have  social programmes, countless organisation that look after the interest of both children and the family.  For the UK to be classified as the worst country in the industrialised word for our children to grow must be a mistake, or is it?

I find it very hard to understand, most industrialised countries has drinking, smoking and underage sex.  What makes the UK more unique as to the  finding by UNICEF, I would very much like to know.  I suppose that I would agree that underage sex is a major problem, but so it is in other countries and this is mainly due to the break down of the family unit, and one which has seen parental rights eroded over the years.

I grew up in a society that allowed my parents to clout me around the ears when I step out of line, the community was my parents as well as my natural parents and I did not turn out to be a murderer, or commit any form of crimes.  I raised my children up in the same manner I was bought up in and they turned out to be productive citizen.

Raising productive children takes a community, and it is not only the government that should be at fault here, I only lay blame at the government feet when they put in place silly legislation that interfere with how individual raised their children.

It is unfortunate that the 21st century, has seen us with too many single parent, too many marriages ended in divorce, technology which allowed our children become adults before they are ready, too many advertisement that are aimed at the young.  The century that we are now living in, good as some of the progress has been, the flip side is that children no longer remain childlike for too long.

There are certain old-fashioned values that we should strive to maintain, one of which is the family unit, irrespective of what century we go to.
