Boy, 8, feared lost in river

Cashmere Castillo, 8, fell into the North Branch of the Chicago River on Sunday. The second-grader couldn't swim.

An 8-year-old boy playing tag at his Albany Park neighborhood park was pulled under by the current after falling into the North Branch of the Chicago River on Sunday evening, officials said.

Efforts by his father and older brother apparently failed to save Cashmere Castillo, a second-grade honor student at Volta Elementary School.  Cashmere had jumped a three-foot-high fence, said his brother Christian Castillo, 13.

Christian said he saw his brother near the fence and thought it was odd, as Cashmere couldn’t swim. “I saw him near the river. I never thought he would try to jump over a fence,” Christian said.  The older brother was playing basketball with a friend as Cashmere was playing tag with his buddies.

“I’d take one shot and glance at him.”
