A 13-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of an asylum seeker in the Benwell area of Newcastle.

Papa Mody Mbaye, 30 and from Senegal, died in hospital on 15 February, three days after being found with a brain injury in Hugh Gardens.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons will appear before Newcastle magistrates on Thursday morning.

Two other boys, aged 17 and 15, were previously charged with murder and have been remanded in custody.

Mr Mbaye, who was also known as Alioune Cisse, arrived in Tyneside earlier this year and was seeking asylum in the UK.
