THE body of an Australian nuclear scientist who went missing in the wilds of Canada five months ago has been found in the Ottawa River near the town where he was living.
Two canoeists found the body of former Melbourne resident Lachlan Cranswick, 41, in 2.5 metres of water near the town of Deep River last weekend.
His brother Rupert said Lachlan’s photo identification was found on the body which was clothed in the outfit the scientist was last seen wearing.
Lachlan had been working at the nuclear facility for the past seven years.
Rupert said it appears his brother had ventured on to the frozen river and fell through the ice.
“There could have been some wolves in the area which might explain what he was doing on the ice, trying to avoid them,” Rupert told AAP.
He said the family will have Lachlan cremated in Canada and bring his ashes home.
“It’s pretty sad, we were hoping it would not come to this outcome,” Rupert said.
