8-year-old victim of gang war — Police

Jamaica – THE Hunts Bay Police says a gang feud between men from sections of Olympic Gardens known as ‘Back Road’ and Tower Avenue was the reason behind yesterday’s murder of an eight-year-old girl at Mahagony Road.

The dead girl has been identified as Jodian Bignal. Police report that she was at home when four gunmen broke open a window to the house and opened fire hitting her.

She was taken to hospital where she died while being treated.

Head of the St Andrew South Police, Superintendent Delroy Hewitt said that while no suspect has been identified, investigations were continuing.

“We have heard names but I can tell you that there is a gang war in that area for about two weeks now. Men from ‘Back Road’ have been at war with others from Tower Avenue and there have been cases of shootings back and forth,” Hewitt told the Observer.

He said Jodian could have been the victim of a reprisal shooting.

“We suspect she was related to somebody who they came for and did not find so they fired shots into the house and killed her,” he said.

Hewitt vowed to bring Jodian’s killers to justice.

“It is just a matter of time but whoever is responsible for this heinous crime will be held,” he said.
