The recent leaked documents on the Internet by Wikileaks and the subsequent newspaper article regarding the Afghanistan war and the information that was withheld from the public, demonstrate once again that politicians never learn.
In most cases when politicians deceive the public there deception always come to light and yet they seems to continue down this road which eventual see them having egg on their face.
In the last few months, we had Prime Minister Bruce Golding (Jamaica) firstly denying that he had anything to do with Manatt Phelps situation involving Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke. Having denied his involvement he was forced to go before parliament and in fact admit that he had lied about what part he played with regard to these lawyers, lobbying the the US authority in respect of ‘Dudus’.
We have the Scottish Government and an Ex former Labour foreign secretary refusing to attend an inquiry with regard to the Libyan Megrahi, convicted Lockerbie bomber, early release from prison and supposedly medical grounds and this has now proven to be inaccurate, instead of Megrahi been dead in the 3 months he his alive and kicking a year later.
The icing on the cake now is the documents that have leaked by Wikileaks outlining the various disinformation that has been given to the public regarding the fighting in Afghanistan and the fact that the Taliban were better equipped than the public was made to believe. This should not really come as a great surprise to anyone, as we all know that politician as a propensity to disguise the truth in security clap-trap.
It is understandable that Governments has to keep a level of secrecy from the public otherwise they would severely compromise the integrity of clandestine operation and I believe that generally the public support then. However, stupid information that would not compromise their mission in the fight against terrorism should be made available to the public. When you cloud yourself in too much secrecy, there is going to eventually get to a point where the cat is going to be let out of the bag.
