THIRTEEN people are dead and nine missing after a boat sank off Indonesia’s East Java province.
“Thirteen people were killed in a boat accident off the coast of Raas island. Nine people are still missing,” Surabaya city search and rescue agency head Sutrisno said.
“We’ve found 18 survivors. We expect the total passengers and crew to be about 40,” said Sutrisno, who goes by one name.
He said the boat, which likely sank due to strong waves, went down before noon yesterday.
The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands has a poor sea safety record, and fatal accidents are common.
About 25 people died after their boat sank on Tuesday off the resort island of Bali.
