Mygripe THE decomposing body of British code-breaker Gareth Williams was found padlocked shut in a holdall in a bath in his London flat, an inquest was told.
The cause of Mr Williams’ death has yet to be established. Police were yet to formally declare a murder investigation, but described his death as “suspicious and unexplained”.
Mr Williams worked as a code expert for GCHQ, the UK’s listening centre in southwestern England, but was on secondment to British intelligence agency MI6.
His body was found on August 23 in his apartment in Pimlico, central London, close to the agency’s headquarters located by the River Thames.
Officers found his corpse locked inside a large sports bag in the bath of his apartment’s en suite bathroom after his colleagues said they had not seen him at work.
Coroner Dr Paul Knapman told Westminster Coroner’s Court in central London: “The holdall was padlocked shut and inside was a lifeless body, and it appeared that the body was in an advanced state of decay.” An autopsy was inconclusive and further tests were being carried out.
Dr Knapman adjourned the inquest to September 8. Mygripe
