Mother took iPad video before killing kids

A CALIFORNIAN woman filmed herself on her iPad smoking methamphetamine before shooting her two young children, their father and a cousin and then committing suicide, according to reports.

Aide Mendez, 23, killed her two children – Aliyah Echeverria, 17 months, and Isaiah Echeverria, 3 – as well as her boyfriend’s cousin, Paul Medina, 27, the LA Times cited police as saying.

The apparent murder-suicide in Central Valley began on Sunday morning, when Mendez argued with Eduardo Lopez, 33, the father of her two children, the Associated Press reported.

Earlier, she had used her iPad to record herself and Medina taking drugs, the AP wrote.

“We do know that drugs played a key role, but we don’t know to what extent,” Lt Mark Salazar of the Fresno Police Department told the AP. “She was seen prior to the shooting smoking methamphetamine. She recorded herself on an iPad showing her and Paul Medina smoking meth. We know the power of meth.”

The violence was sparked by an argument between Mendez and Lopez on Sunday morning.

The LA Times reports that Lopez was found outside the family apartment building with a knife and gunshot wound. Mendez was found dead in the bathroom and the children were found in the bathtub, police reportedly said.
