Missing Chandler dad, son found dead after apparent vehicle crash

A missing Chandler man and his 7-year-old son were found dead in an apparent vehicle crash Sunday afternoon, said Chandler police.

The bodies of Conrad Hernandez, 47, and his son, Max, 7, were found ejected from a vehicle one mile south of Sunset Point along Interstate 17.

A helicopter located Hernandez’s 2009 Mazda Sedan about 5:30 p.m.

“The vehicle was off the road into a ravine,” said Detective David Ramer, a spokesman for Chandler police.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials have suspended investigation of the area until Monday morning due to dangerous terrain.

“The terrain is very treacherous. It (the car) is at the bottom of a drop-off and down some distance. It’s dangerous to try to work tonight,” said Sgt. Kevin Wood, spokesman for DPS.

Authorities said no other vehicles were involved.

The cause of the wreck was not known, said Ramer.

The pair was last seen Friday, when Hernandez was supposed to take his son to school but called in to report that Max was ill, said police in a press release.

Hernandez, who suffered from depression, last spoke to family members on around 8:30 a.m. that day.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials were investigating the incident.
