Militants from Afghanistan attack Pakistani post

KHAR, Pakistan—A government official says about 60 militants crossed into Pakistan’s northwest from Afghanistan and attacked a paramilitary checkpoint, killing one soldier.

Shah Nasim says the militants launched Monday’s early morning attack in the Bajur tribal region with mortar and rocket fire that covered their subsequent advance onto the Frontier Corps checkpoint.

The checkpoint is located near Kitkot village in Pakistan’s Mamound area of Bajur.

Nasim, a senior government official in Mamound, says soldiers fought the militants for more than two hours before reinforcements arrived and managed to push the attackers back over the border into Afghanistan’s Kunar province.

Nasim says three soldiers were wounded in the fighting, and two militants were killed.
