Man dumped unconscious boy without seeking medical help, fearing he’d get into trouble

A MAN who’s pleaded guilty over the death of Indian boy Gurshan Singh did not seek medical help after knocking him unconscious, documents reveal.

Instead, Gursewak Dhillon, worried he would get into trouble, put the unconscious three-year-old Gurshan in the boot of his car, drove around Melbourne for three hours, then dumped his body in long grass by the side of the road on March 4, some 20km from his family’s home in Lalor, according to court documents.

The boy’s body was found by a truck driver about 6.30pm that day.

Mr Dhillon, an Indian national and part-time taxi driver, pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today to one count of manslaughter by criminal negligence.

Mr Dhillon, who lived with Gurshan and his parents, admitted to police he knocked the boy unconscious with the front screen door.

His wife, Simarjeed Kaur, initially denied any knowledge of his involvement but later admitted seeing the accused with the toddler, who was unconscious but alive.

She admitted getting his car keys and watching him take the toddler away in the car.

Mr Dhillon told her the boy was alive when he put him in the boot, as he was blinking his eyes. His eyes were also moving when he put him in the grass.

Mr Dhillon had refused his wife’s suggestion to call the boy’s mother after knocking him, saying they would get the blame.

After dumping the boy, he returned home about 3.30pm, and joined his housemates in searching for Gurshan, who had by that time been reported missing by his parents.

In his police interview, Mr Dhillon said he didn’t want to be blamed for hurting the boy, so he didn’t tell the boy’s mother, despite her being home at the time.

He also did not call an ambulance, seek medical attention or provide him first aid, despite being qualified to do so.

Mr Dhillon told police he believed he would get into trouble, hurting his chances of gaining permanent residency in Australia.

He was charged three days after Gurshan’s body was found.

Mr Dhillon will face the Victorian Supreme Court for a directions hearing on September 21.
