Lindsay Lohan heads to jail to begin 90-day term

LINDSAY Lohan, the actress and tabloid favourite, swapped her designer outfits for a prison jumpsuit yesterday as she began a 90-day sentence for breaking her parole after a 2007 drink-driving conviction.

The 24-year-old was led away in handcuffs after a brief court appearance in Beverly Hills to confirm her term. Her last comment on Twitter the night before was: “The only ‘bookings’ I’m familiar with are Disney films, never thought I’d be booking into jail … eeeks.”

The former child star, who began modelling aged 3 and won plaudits at 11 for a 1998 remake of The Parent Trap, has increasingly made the headlines more for her partying and run-ins with the police than for her acting.

Two weeks ago a judge ruled that the Mean Girls star had violated her probation by missing seven alcohol education classes since December. She had been on probation since August 2007 after pleading guilty to minor cocaine possession charges and no contest to three drink-driving charges.

The actress also missed a court date in May when she claimed that she had lost her passport while attending the Cannes Film Festival.

Wearing jeans, a grey top, black belt and black jacket, Lohan showed up in court about ten minutes late yesterday. The judge, exasperated by her previous antics, has ordered officials not to allow Lohan to serve any of her sentence under house arrest or on work release.

Lohan was accompanied to court by her mother, Dina, and younger sister, Ali, who wiped away tears after her sister was taken away. Her estranged father, Michael Lohan, yelled: “We love you, Lindsay!”

The actress was driven across Los Angeles to the Century Regional Detention Facility in the industrial suburb of Lynwood, with photographers and TV helicopters in pursuit.

She has been in the detention facility before – for 84 minutes – after her 2007 arrest. This time the authorities have said that her jail time could be as little as a quarter of the sentence, due to overcrowding and the relatively minor nature of her offences.

The prison has acted as a holding pen for a variety of starlets in recent times, including Paris Hilton (23 days served), Nicole Richie (82 minutes served) and Khloe Kardashian (4 hours, 37 minutes served).

Lohan will spend her time in a 12ft-by-8ft (3.7m-by-2.4m) isolation cell for her own security and will receive the same set of simple toiletries given to all inmates. No mobile phones or computers are allowed. She must also attend a 90-day residential rehabilitation programme on her release.

The sentence has left some of the actress’s projects in limbo, including her role as the porn star Linda Lovelace in a biopic. However, she is likely to be out in time for the release of Machete, in which she plays a socialite with a penchant for guns.
