Labour candidate for Bootle attacked by dog

A Labour candidate has had the tip of his finger bitten off by what he claims was a pitbull terrier type dog while campaigning in his constituency.

Joe Benton, the candidate for Bootle on Merseyside, was pushing leaflets through the letterbox of a house in Gonville Road when he was attacked.

The 77-year-old fell to the ground and hit his head and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident means Mr Benton will not be attending Thursday night’s count.

He is currently being treated at the specialist regional plastic surgery unit at Whiston Hospital, where doctors said it was impossible to save the tip of the index finger of his right hand.

Merseyside Police said the force had not received a complaint about the incident.
