Jamaica hit with US travel alert Reacts to Dudus tension, fears of violence

THE United States has reacted to the ongoing standoff between security forces and residents in West Kingston by issuing a travel alert for its citizens in Jamaica, particularly in Kingston.

The alert issued today by the US State Department referenced unconfirmed reports of criminal gangs “amassing in the Kingston area”.

“If the situation ignites, there is a possibility of severe disruptions of movement within Kingston, including blocking of access roads to the Norman Manley International Airport. The possibility exists that unrest could spread beyond the general Kingston area. The US Embassy Kingston is taking extra security precautions,” said the alert.

Americans were urged to monitor local news reports and “consider the level of security present when venturing outside their residence or hotel”. They are also advised to register themselves with their embassy here.
