Ghana beat US 2-1 to advance to World Cup quarter finals

United States' Ricardo Clark, left, and Ghana's Kwadwo Asamoah, left, vie for the ball during the World Cup round of 16 soccer match between the United States and Ghana at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Asamoah Gyan’s goal at the start of extra time has given Ghana a 2-1 win over the United States in their World Cup second-round match.

Gyan hooked a left-foot shot into the roof of the net in the 93rd minute. Gyan had latched onto Andre Ayew’s deep ball and maintained his balance as he beat American defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Jay DeMerit before shooting. It was the only goal in extra time.

Kevin-Prince Boateng had put Ghana ahead in the fifth minute with a low shot from the edge of the area.

But Landon Donovan sent the match into extra time with a 62nd-minute penalty kick after Clint Dempsey was fouled in the area.

Ghana meet Uruguay in the quarterfinals at Soccer City on Friday.
