AS US President Barack Obama prepares to confront BP executives over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, British icon Dame Helen Mirren already made clear her feelings on the subject.
Appearing on US television, the Oscar-winning actress was greeted with cheers and applause as she told talk show host David Letterman that “in my mind… (BP) stands for bloody p—poor.”
The 64-year-old star said she was “so relieved” that England drew against Team USA in Saturday’s World Cup soccer showdown, adding that “if Britain had beaten America, what with BP… I don’t think I could have come on this show.”
“I would have been so embarrassed and mortified at being British, I think I’d have had to cancel,” she said during Monday’s program appearance.
Oil has been spilling into the Gulf of Mexico since the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig, leased by BP from Transocean, which killed 11 workers.
A scientific group put together by the US Government estimated the spill rate yesterday as being in the region of 35,000 to 60,000 barrels per day.
In today’s White House meeting, Mr Obama is sitting down with BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg in an attempt to win important concessions on setting up an escrow account to pay spill claims and an independent panel to oversee the process.
